XR5 Turbo: The Hard Facts

Postby BaSH PR0MPT on 21 Jul 2010, 05:06

Having fallen in love with my boosted XR6T, I fell in love with the angry stumpy design of the Focus RS when it came out on the international market. I was woo'd by the concept of a straight 5 engine, boosted was just extra foreplay. And so, coming to a crucial point of upgrading my car and ditching the green goblin for a newer ride, I had a call to make.

I was either going to get an FG XR6 (and turbo it with the BA-BF factory larger turbo) or an XR5T. I fucked around for a bit on a few sites, having kind of liked the look of the latest Mitsu Lancer Evo, and found that it's peak power output for a STOCK Lancer was 177 kw and 343 twisties which is a neat sum.

I then found the undisputedly most modified XR5T in the country, spoke to the owner, and got a copy of his dyno. This is a HEAVILY modified XR5T which, with any further mods, would have to turf the turbo for something larger and require far more money than it's worth mind you.

To save you loading the file, results are less than a stock Lancer, and costs $10k more, and took near $10k more modifications on top of that. The XR5 uses a Bosch ME9 management system which is very similar to that used in the Volvo S40 T5 introduced a couple of years ago. The standard PowerFlash reprogram involves increasing boost pressure from 0.65 Bar to a maximum of around 1 Bar. This peak pressure is achieved at mid-range rpm and tapers to around 0.8 Bar at high rpm.

For those who don't know what that means, basically a crippled blind 12 year old senile daschund can fart with more force than the turbo puts out even modded, and the car is ultimately a waste of money. Fools and horses my friends. Anyway, on with the dyno: -
